Errata: Takatsugu Muramatsu's "Land"

Takatsugu Muramatsu's "Land" was written for Momoko Kamiya and premiered at PASIC 2004 in Nashville, Tennessee. It was one of a few premieres on that amazing concert all about "pieces for peace" as Momoko called it, but it certainly stood out to I think everyone in attendance as one of, if not the, best part of the concert. We waited after the concert to find out if it would be published... "Maybe," came the reply. We were needy and desperate for this beautiful work, and so people wrote Momoko for months. I think she finally convinced Muramatsu to have the work published so we would all leave her alone!

The score was first published by Beurskens Muziekuitgeverij in 2006. For many years, the talk of some mistakes in the printed score (because that just happens sometimes) slowly spread by word of mouth but no one seemed to have an errata or know what was actually incorrect —a few things could be discerned from analysis, but no one was completely sure. I personally spent a lot of time listening to Momoko's recording of the work on her album Marimba Virtuoso and made several pitch changes based on those sessions. At some point in the past few years, a revised version with (most) corrections was printed, but I have been unable to figure out exactly when that occurred. Yet I have been unable to find a source that provides the errata for people with the first printing. Please note, if you have the revised version (you'll just know when you see the following are fixed in your part) there are still two mistakes in the score; you can skip to the end of this post to find them.

With the permission of the publisher, I am pleased to present the errata for "Land" as follows:

M. 10: Last 16th note, A (not G#)

M. 15: Beat 4, left hand double stop C#/A (not C#/G#)

M. 18: And-of-2, C# (not A)

M. 21: And-of-4, A (not G#)

M. 23: Downbeat, lowest note D (not E)

M. 25: And-of-1, C# alone (not A/C#)

M. 29: See Example 1

Example 1, Measure 29 (Version 2)Scores are written as Version 1, but the common practice is to play the measure as straight 16th notes.

Example 1, Measure 29 (Version 2)
Scores are written as Version 1, but the common practice is to play the measure as straight 16th notes.

M. 31: And-of-3, D alone (not E/F#/A). This matches all of the other single-note off beats.

M. 40: Beat 4, D/C (not F/C)

M. 41: See Example 2

The Bb in parentheses is not in the revised printing but is played by Momoko and mimics the previous tuplet. The original printing incorrectly indicates a G.

M. 48: Downbeat, lowest note D (not C)

M. 50: See Example 3

Final measure: Last two notes of the tuplet should be middle C (not G) and F [the same F on the bottom of the final chord] (not middle C). Beat 3 will then read: ascending F-C-F-G-C-F.

Two notes appear in both the original and revised printing that do not match with the premiere recording by Momoko Kamiya. Both of these changes are in line with the melodic and harmonic material that occurs throughout the work and I believe they should be changed.

M. 16: Beat 4, right hand quarter note E (not D)

M. 20: And-of-2, E (not D) [this makes the pattern the same as in M. 22]
