When Pigs Fly

I first saw When Pigs Fly sometime in the early 2000s. It was a small theater in North Carolina. I remember being obsessed that this incredibly gay little show existed. The costumes were so much fun. The songs were really catchy and campy. But it also had so much heart and that really stuck with me.

Nearly 20 years later I got to perform the show with Uptown Players, one of the premiere LGBTQ+ theater companies in the country, as they were doing it as a celebration of their 20th season and the first show they produced. The show was supposed to be making a return to Broadway but they ran out of money. Fortunately, Bob Mackie had already finished (most of) the costumes for the revival, and our production was able to use them. We had updated lyrics for the three “torch songs” provided by Mark Waldrop who also came to see the show and spent a nice evening out for drinks and a drag show with several of us and I was able to tell him how much that little show meant 20 years ago.
