My first musical after moving to Dallas. It was a concert version at Dallas City Performance Hall between Uptown Players and Turtle Creek Chorale. Basically you had the normal cast and then a couple hundred guys in the ensemble. It was very titanic.
There are two percussion parts in one book. Percussion 1 is timpani, keyboard percussion, and some auxiliary instruments. Percussion 2 is auxiliary instruments and drum set. The drum set really only appears as drum set on one song (“Doing the Latest Rag”), the rest of the show the snare is played a lot in an orchestral capacity.
I played Percussion 1 for the show, but switched to the drum set part on “Doing the Latest Rag” as the other player wasn’t comfortable on that part. We also had to share a few instruments so our setup basically became a straight line along the back wall of the pit.
Everything was acoustic except timpani, which I played on the KAT (I didn’t own timpani at the time). We had to rent a tubaphone (a very prominent instrument in this show), so also renting timpani wasn’t possible.
