TYPE OF ACCOMPANIMENT: Fixed & Effects

MUSICAL OVERVIEW: The work requires the ability to add a reverb effect to live marimba, as well as, playback of two audio files supplied by the composer According to the score, the reverb effect should have a “long tail,” giving the processed marimba sound a shimmering quality. The composer supplies a MIDI reference recording to demonstrate the desired reverb sound. The audio cues contain sustained sounds and create a sustained, reverb effect while the soloist performs a rubato lyrical line. The single-line writing seems to become an accompaniment to itself through the sustained sounds created by the reverb effect.

ACCOMPANIMENT OVERVIEW: In addition to using reverb as an effect, two prerecorded cues are triggered during the performance. The performer controlling the signal input to the reverb effect with a foot pedal and triggering the audio cues with a program such as MAX may accomplish the work. An alternative setup involves a second person following the score and triggering the two audio cues in addition to changing the input level to the reverb when indicated. Within the sections using audio cues, the performer is free to use rubato as there are no synchronized elements.

TECHNIQUE OVERVIEW: Idiomatic, two-mallet writing. There are no large jumps, and stickings are alternated except for occasional doubles. The technical aspects of the work make it accessible to younger players.
