An Honourable Silence (2001)
Andrián Pertout

PUBLISHER: Australian Music Centre

RECORDINGS: None

RANGE: 4.0 octaves

DURATION: 8:00

MOVEMENTS: Single movement

TYPE OF ACCOMPANIMENT: Fixed

MUSICAL OVERVIEW: The composition is in the style of a soloist with orchestra, requiring the tape to serve as an accompaniment. The work utilizes the rhythmic and harmonic language of Persian music. The score calls for a 3 minute improvised cadenza. When the tape is playing, the marimba must perform strictly with the tape as figures are duplicated between the two parts. Two lightweight hard mallets are recommended for speed.

ACCOMPANIMENT OVERVIEW: Sampled string instruments. The accompaniment is an electronic realization of the orchestral score. Provided in three sections, the tape must be triggered at precise moments throughout the performance.

TECHNIQUE OVERVIEW: May be performed with two mallets. The composition is easier with two mallets, though a performer may wish to have the option of a graduated four-mallet set. If four mallets are used, the following stroke types are necessary: SI, SIA, DV, and DL. Double-vertical strokes occur only a couple times in the score. The writing focuses on a single melodic line requiring intricate embellishments. The inner two mallets will perform the majority of notes in the composition. Precise execution of very fast passages is required.

COMPOSER'S NOTE: The following text by Andrián Pertout was taken from the score:

The work pays tribute to Iranian musician Siamak Noory and serves as a dedication to the victims of political and religious persecution from around the globe.
